How to Be a Responsible Gun Owner?

Why mass shootings don't convince gun owners to support gun control - Vox

Owning a gun is a Constitutional right, but because it is such a big responsibility, there are a few rules you need to follow. Whether you own one firearm or several, you need to use these three tips to be a responsible gun owner.

Buy the Proper Storage Equipment

Applying for your concealed carry permit allows you to have a gun on your person at all times so you can defend yourself and others in an emergency situation. However, tucking your firearm into the waistband of your pants is not always the best idea. There are many holsters for new gun owners you can invest in that are designed to keep your specific weapon safe and secure while you are carrying it.

Because you won’t have your gun on your person 24/7, you also need a secure place to store it when you are home. Your bedside table is not a safe place to keep a firearm, especially if you have children. Invest in a secure safe and keep it hidden so people don’t know you have a gun. This reduces the risk of accidents happening by people mishandling your firearm.

Practice Shooting

There is no point in owning a firearm if you don’t know how to use it properly. If you want to be able to defend yourself if the need arises, you need to spend time practicing your shooting skills. Make time each month to visit your local gun range and practice shooting. You may find it beneficial to practice with different gun models, but ultimately, you need to be comfortable handling your own firearm in case you ever find yourself in an emergency situation.

Teach People You Live With About Gun Safety

If there is a gun in the house, everyone living under your roof needs to understand basic gun safety. Even if they may never touch your firearm, they need to know that it is there and how to handle it in an emergency. While this is important for roommates and spouses, it is especially important for children. Kids need to understand the danger associated with guns so they never view firearms as toys. Children who are taught how to handle guns safely are less likely to be involved in accidents involving firearms.

Guns are great for enhancing your sense of security, but owning a firearm is a big responsibility. Make sure you follow these three rules to be a responsible gun owner.
